Diversity, Inclusivity, Multiculturalism, and Global Context Education

Rationale and Background: In its commitment to academic excellence, Village School intentionally fosters a community that respects the diversity of the human experience. The school cultivates and sustains a safe environment that empowers and honors each individual’s culture, heritage, and identity in order to broaden everyone’s social competence and ability to thrive as a global citizen. Village School seeks families, faculty, staff and administrators who share and uphold these values.

Goal: Continue to foster an environment and culture that reflect and value diversity in the everyday practice of inclusiveness and multiculturalism in curriculum, programming, and community interactions.

Implementation Steps:

  • Communicate the necessity of diversity, inclusivity and multiculturalism for academic excellence.
  • Educate parents and guardians about their essential role in supporting a diverse and inclusive school community for their children’s social and academic success.
  • Provide professional development and resources to the Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty and staff as it pertains to diversity, inclusivity and multiculturalism.
  • Actively recruit members to the Board of Trustees and its committees who reflect the diversity of the broader school community.
  • Continue to attract and support a diverse family and student population.
  • Expand and implement Village School’s curriculum in order to cultivate and inspire global citizens and leaders.

Institutional Sustainability

Background and Rationale: Village School is committed to providing an environment that supports the long-term needs of its programs, students, faculty, and parents. The school continually assesses ways in which it can optimize the facilities, enhance a dynamic advancement plan, and maintain a sound financial structure.

Goal: Ensure institutional sustainability for future generations.

Implementation Steps:

  • Re-examine the current master plan, focusing on optimizing existing facilities, environmental sustainability, and foreseeable needs, including technology infrastructure.
  • Continue to foster a robust advancement plan that implements versatile fundraising strategies, including long-term augmentation of the endowment fund.
  • Maintain a flexible financial structure in order to pursue growth opportunities proactively as they arise, enhance school operations, and ensure a continuing strong financial position.
  • Implement a Board of Trustees communication plan that keeps the school community informed of the focus, priorities, and purview of the Board in carrying out its governance responsibilities and obligations.

Marketing and Communication

Background and Rationale: Village School strives to ensure that the constituents it serves understand and embrace the school’s mission, values, and programs through effective marketing and communication. The school believes that a dynamic marketing program will also inform the external community about the exceptional strengths of Village School.

Goal: Develop a marketing strategy that embraces and advances the mission and values of Village School in order to communicate a consistent message internally and externally.

Implementation Steps:

  • Utilize marketing research to develop a clear and concise message that defines Village School and ensures that all school communications adhere to this message.
  • Build annual marketing plans that specifically reinforce this message to internal and external constituents.
  • Differentiate Village School from other schools by communicating its strengths.

Program Assessment and Innovation

Rationale and Background: A dynamic learning community that embraces growth and innovation is vital for ensuring the academic success of its students and institutional sustainability. Village School is committed to dedicating necessary resources to enhance its program and foster its growth.

Goal: Ensure the program uses current research, best practices, and technological advances to inspire excellence and global preparedness.

Implementation Steps:

  • Continue to evaluate the program to ensure our students are universally prepared for secondary school and beyond.
  • Continue to explore and integrate the best technologies to enhance student learning both in and outside of the classroom.
  • Explore and cultivate new relationships that connect Village School with educational institutions, cultural venues, and individuals, to inspire passion through experience and exposure.
  • Foster a professional community in which a growth mindset is essential for continued success.

Strategic Plan Update on Implementation (Summer 2016)

During the 2015-2016 school year, Village School began implementing the steps set out in the plan, all of which move the school toward accomplishing its strategic goals. It is important to note that each goal is carefully aligned with our Mission and, as they are accomplished, will serve to further strengthen the school community and further enable us to serve our students and families in extraordinary ways. Here is a glimpse of some of what was accomplished during the 2015-2016 school year.

Diversity, Inclusivity, Multiculturalism and Global Context Education

Continue to foster an environment and culture that reflect and values diversity in the everyday practice of inclusiveness and multiculturalism in curriculum, programming and community interactions.

Accomplishments toward implementation:

  • Robert Greene, from the Jones Institute, led discussions involving Cultural Competency with the Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty and staff. Mr. Greene also led a parent discussion on raising culturally competent children.
  • Alison Park of Blink Consulting met with the leaders of the Village School Parent Association at the annual Leadership Summit and spoke on critically rethinking diversity as well as leadership development.
  • As part of expanding the Village School’s curriculum in cultivating culturally competent students, the Diversity Committee, consisting of faculty, staff and administration arranged several all-school assemblies.
  • Committee on Diversity and Inclusivity (CODI) provided an additional educational component by highlighting various cultural traditions, holidays and diversity through both email communication and visual displays on campus.

Institutional Sustainability

Accomplishments toward implementation:

  • We continue to revitalize the campus facilities as exhibited by the complete remodel of the TK and Kindergarten area, including restrooms.
  • The security camera system has been upgraded and the school has employed an additional security guard.
  • The school has employed a part-time nurse.
  • WiFi connectivity on campus has been upgraded.
  • The school continues to vigorously pay down its debt with a $749,000 principal reduction in 2015-2016.
  • A new firm has been engaged to manage the school’s investment portfolio.
  • The school has maintained a balanced budget.
  • Fundraising expectations in all fundraising campaigns have exceeded goals.
  • There are ongoing plans to enhance communication to parents about the role of the Board of Trustees as the school’s governing body.

Marketing and Communication

Accomplishments toward implementation:

  • We completed insight gathering to fully understand internal and external perceptions of Village School.
  • A branding strategy with a clear and consice brand idea that accurately represents Village School was developed.
  • An audit of all communication vehicles was conducted through the lens of the new brand idea to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • A marketing plan was developed to align all communication tactics with the brand idea.

Program Assessment and Innovation

Ensure the program uses current research, best practices and technological advances to inspire excellence and global preparedness.

Accomplishments toward Implementation:

  • Enrichment groups implemented in grades 3-6 to allow for smaller groups working across the content areas.
  • Math contests implemented in grades three-six to further challenge students.
  • Book Clubs in kindergarten to grow our youngest readers.
  • Architectural projects in grade 1 to build mathematical reasoning skills.
  • Sixth Grade engaged in 20% time projects which allow students to design a project around an individual passion.
  • Fourth grade created Minecraft models of California Missions.
  • Second Grade wrote and produced newscasts that communicated the goings-on in the classroom.
  • We initiated a relationship with UCLA and brought in our first speaker from their Memory Lab.
  • Guest speakers for faculty meetings to better grow faculty’s understanding of innovations within education and learning.
