Passport to Adventure

KThe kindergarten program establishes the foundation for the rest of a child’s life at Village School. With our year-long theme, “Passport to Adventure,” all student learning is framed in terms of a journey around the world. Children are given a passport to knowledge; they learn reading and math and begin to integrate many life skills into their daily routines. Children also compare and contrast aspects of the various cultures studied. During the school year kindergarteners travel to three continents, visiting three countries within each continent.  These travels allow students to explore each country’s literature and culture through stories and poems, music and dance, art, games and dramatic play.

While on each continent, kindergarten students participate in a complementary world service project.  To further solidify the children’s understandings about each continent, there is a culminating celebration for each continent including musical guests, food and crafts.  Africa goes out with an African Safari Party with the Nigerian Talking Drummers.  Asia is sent on its way with an Asian Tea Ceremony, where the children participate in a Taiko drumming workshop.  Finally, mark their departure from South America with a Carnaval celebration complete with Brazilian dancers and drummers.

It is in kindergarten that teachers also introduce the children to the six Village Values: respect, responsibility, trust, fairness, caring and courage. These Values are reinforced through Community Circle and Family Circle activities, our Village Values song, everyday conversations, and school wide events.
