Vowel Friends

Integration Opportunity: Language Arts, vowels, reading skills, oral speaking

Technology Skills: pencil, paint bucket, text, sound recording tools

In the late winter, our kindergarten students are introduced to vowel pairs. These vowel friends help each other out - "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." Here is a Pixie project our classroom teachers created to share with parents. Easy and fun!

First Grade

Monster Exchange

Through the online Monster Exchange project, each first grade class is paired with a partner class in another part of the world. For the past two years, we have had the pleasure of working with Year 1/2 students at Saglik ve Egitim Vakfi (Health and Education Foundation) Elementary School in Izmir, Turkey. The project begins with pairs students drawing a monster. Then students write descriptions on how to draw these monsters. The descriptions, without the pictures, are exchanged with our partner class. Students in the partner class then redrew the monsters using only the descriptions. (We do the same with their monsters, too!) Finished monsters are uploaded into an online gallery where viewers can read the detailed descriptions and view both the original and redrawn monsters.

Second Grade

Suitcase Stories

Integration Opportunity: Social Studies, Ancestors, narrative writing, oral speaking

Technology Skills: pencil, paint bucket, sound recording tools

Each fall, second grade students study about their ancestors. As a classroom writing assignment, students create "Suitcase Stories" describing where their ancestors are from, what heirlooms their ancestors brought when immigrating, and what they would bring if they were to travel to a distant country. To extend this project, students use Pixie to illustrate their stories. They then use their writing as a script, recording narration for each slide. These digital Suitcase Stories are then sent home over Thanksgiving break to be shared with family.

Third Grade

Doodle 4 Google

In 2009, our third grade students participated in the Doodle 4 Google competition. Here are a few of our entries:

Rock Our World

Third grade students have had the opportunity to participate in a global project called Rock Our World. Below are a few artifacts of our work.

Round 12: Walk Our World

Our International Song: Created by International Team A

Village School students created the original drum track, then international members of Team A added tracks each week. Our students completed the song by adding vocals during the final week.

Our Rock Our World/Walk Our World shoe design And, to advertise our “Perfect Shoe for Life,” we created this commercial:

The Rock Our World 12 Family Night broadcast

Village School is featured about 1:25 into the recording. New Zealand students sang a traditional song about 1:15 into the recording. And, finally, a great dance routine by some other New Zealand students at 1:34! A HUGE thank you to Lucas and Ben. They did an awesome job answering questions!
