Conversations about Diversity, Equity and Social Justice
As children grow and mature, their concerns about their place in this world begin to fill their minds more frequently. Thoughts of How do I fit in? become more prevalent. As this happens, it becomes increasingly important that we surround students with positive images, voices, experiences and conversations about their own identity. During our parent discussion group Kaleidoscope, we talk about and share our own journeys through self-identities, social identity groups and those moments in our lives when we have felt like “the other.” Our children will live in a world in which they need to work with and understand people whose lives and opinions are different from theirs, and it is our job as parents and educators to teach and model those skills necessary to work successfully in that world.
