Dear Village School Community,
On behalf of the Village School Board of Trustees and the Head of School Search Committee, we are pleased to announce the appointment of John Evans as the next Head of Village School, effective July 1, 2020. We are confident that John's strong elementary school experience and naturally charismatic leadership qualities make him the best leader of Village School through its next phase of growth.
Our appointment of John is the culmination of an eight-month search process that drew interest from a wide range of accomplished educators nationwide. Early in the process, we engaged Carney Sandoe & Associates (CSA) to run the search. The CSA team surveyed the community and partnered with the HOS Search Committee to define the most important personal and professional qualities required for our next Village School leader. CSA built a comprehensive slate of qualified candidates and the committee worked diligently to narrow down the pool to 12 semi-finalists for extensive interviews throughout the summer. In the fall, four finalists each spent two days at Village School, meeting with various constituent groups including administration, faculty, parents, VSPA leadership, the Board of Trustees, and alumni parents. Following the visits, the Search Committee completed a deep dive review of each candidate, carefully considering input from a variety of sources including the search committee interviews, community surveys, and candidate references. Based on all of these inputs, the Search Committee reached a decision that John's expertise in elementary education, strong leadership skills, breadth of experience, and warm, engaging demeanor are a perfect match for our school community.
The Village community truly connected with John from the first moment he walked on campus. He brought an energy that made all different constituents feel valued and inspired. Not only did the community fully embrace John, but it was also clear that John felt at home at Village. From John's perspective, "The vibrancy of the Village School community was evident from the moment I stepped onto campus in October. There is nothing more remarkable than joyful faces of children, engaged with their teachers and classmates, laughing and learning. Their energy was matched by the grounded and inspiring faculty. I witnessed a balanced educational program for body and mind, heart and soul, led by a constellation of caring adults thoughtfully nurturing their students in experiential, inquiry-based learning in pursuit of academic excellence. Returning to California will certainly be a homecoming for me, and leading Village into the future is a professional dream come true. I am thrilled to join this dynamic learning community." We are confident that John will not only bring the thought leadership and academic rigor required to guide Village School to the next level, but he will also preserve the values, culture and community that has been built under Nora's leadership and that has become so paramount to this school.
John has been an educator and leader in New York City and Los Angeles independent schools for nearly 22 years. John is currently the Head of Lower School at Friends Seminary in New York City, a role he has held for the past six years. The Lower School is a K-4 division and John is responsible for leading 48 faculty members, 276 students and an $8M+ operating budget. Prior to his role at Friends Seminary, John worked as a 3rd grade teacher while serving as Curriculum Coordinator and Diversity Coordinator at the Trinity School on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. John was a highly respected and admired leader at both Friends and at Trinity, providing him with a broad perspective and range of experiences at both traditional and progressive schools. John began his teaching career at The Willows Community School in Los Angeles, educating children in grades 2-4 for nine years. He spent seven years as an associate professor of education at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles working within the Teach for America program. John holds a B.A. from Miami University, OH, and M.Ed. from Loyola Marymount University in Elementary Education. John is a trustee of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School where he serves on the Institutional Advancement, Finance, and Investment Committees.
John is the best candidate to become the next Head of Village School, as he has experience and capabilities across the critical qualities defined in our position statement. He is a compassionate leader, a thoughtful academic, and an inspiring collaborator with a bias for action who can build on what is special about Village and take the school to the next level. John and his husband, Bill Robinson, will be relocating to Los Angeles with their daughter, Dylan, in early summer. In the meantime, a transition team will be developed, a transition plan will be built, and we will be ready to welcome John, Bill and Dylan to the Village community with open arms.
We are deeply thankful for the hard work of the Search Committee, the helpful insights of Carney Sandoe & Associates and the valuable input we received from all constituents in the school community. Through this collaborative process, we have fine-tuned our vision for the future, and we are deeply grateful that John has chosen to join us as we move forward.
