Early Elementary

Our Youngest Vikings

When our youngest learners enter Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten, they step into a world where curiosity is not only encouraged but also celebrated, and exploration is not only allowed but also actively encouraged.

In Language Arts, we start with storytelling and the magic of discovering that letters have sounds and that sounds combine to form words. Through systematic phonics instruction and emergent reading experiences, students progress from recognizing their names to reading their first book independently.

TK and Kindergarten mathematics is not just about numbers; it's about exploration and discovery. Students explore quantity through games, manipulatives, and math mysteries. They might count the days until a field trip, measure the amount of material in a container, use their intuition to guesstimate the number of items in a jar, or use blocks to understand concepts such as addition and subtraction.

Science naturally extends into our global studies curriculum, where students explore the animal habitats of South America, connecting scientific inquiry with cultural and geographical understanding. As they learn about jaguars in the Amazon rainforest or penguins in Patagonia, children begin to understand the broader world in which they are a part.

Global Studies is not just about history; it's about understanding our place in the world. It begins with the most critical community in a child’s life, their family and classroom. Students learn about themselves, their heritage, and their place in the school community while developing the social skills necessary for learning alongside others.

Applying Problem-Solving Strategies in Math Lab

First graders use cubes and markers to solve story problems in Math Lab. As they work, they focus on two standards of mathematical practice: modeling with mathematics and using tools strategically.

All About Reading in First Grade

Our first graders are building their “superhero stamina” by practicing independent reading. Each student is learning to stay focused on their book, find a successful reading spot, and grow the skills that will make them strong, confident readers.

Not Just a Box: Kindergarteners Imagine Big

In DREAM Studio, Kindergarteners listen to two books by Antoinette Portis, Not a Box and Not a Box City, which celebrate the power of imagination and creativity. Inspired by these stories, students design their own box city using small boxes, art supplies, and cardboard. Along the way, they practice early design thinking skills such as planning and spatial awareness.

Reading Magic with Mama Echo

In Reader’s Workshop, Kindergarteners develop essential reading and comprehension skills. With the help of Mama Echo, a beloved classroom character, students explore consonant blends and practice sounding out words with confidence and joy.

TK Engineers at Work

TK Robots are a beloved Village tradition, where our youngest Vikings engage their imaginations while developing foundational skills in design thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, and public speaking. Through building and presenting their own robot creations, students learn to express ideas clearly and persevere through challenges.
