Upper Division

Preparing for Middle School

Upper Division represents the culmination of the Village School experience.

Combined with daily homeroom meetings, Fifth and sixth-graders benefit from block scheduling, which allows for in-depth exploration of complex topics. This flexible structure allows students time to truly engage with challenging material, helping to ensure a smooth transition to the more specialized and demanding academic environment they will encounter in middle school.

Upper Division students take on leadership roles throughout the school community, serving as buddies to kindergartners and presenting at our annual World’s Fair, where they showcase their in-depth learning about countries they’ve studied. They read books like A Long Walk to Water, which connect literature to global issues, thereby fostering both literacy and global awareness. Our math program, with one dedicated teacher per grade level, provides personalized learning experiences tailored to each student's current level, challenging them to advance their skills through the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum.

Digital citizenship is paramount in our Upper Division program. Technology is integrated appropriately throughout the curriculum, focusing on teaching students to have a critical eye when presented with media and research sources. We provide our students with a range of tools, including computers, iPads, adaptive assessments, and the full suite of Google Education tools. In addition to this exposure, we have units dedicated to online safety, ethical behavior, digital footprints, and AI.

Through increasingly complex assignments, self-directed learning opportunities, and collaborative projects, students develop the organizational skills, time management abilities, and academic confidence essential for middle school success while still benefiting from the close relationships and individual attention that define Village.

Code, Play, Learn: Sixth Graders Level Up in Python

Sixth graders are building their Python coding skills through a fun, game-based program called CodeMonkey. As they move through each level, they strengthen their logical thinking, problem-solving, sequencing, and debugging skills, which will support their growth in STEM and beyond.

Welcome to Weslandia

In the DREAM Studio, fifth graders work on the much-anticipated Weslandia projects, which is a fantasy world-building exercise. Students begin by studying maps and developing map-making skills, then use rice to trace the boundaries of ancient civilizations. In May, they proudly showcase their projects to the community—some even dress in character, share handmade artifacts, and serve food from their imagined civilizations. This is also a special moment of inspiration for our fourth graders, who take on Weslandia next year!

World's Fair: Taste the Nation

Graduating sixth graders share their hard work at World's Fair: Taste the Nation! Each student researches a country, writes a research paper, designs posters and menus, and shares representative dishes with the community.
