Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB)

Building Community at Village

Over the last two years, Village School has worked to enhance its commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). In response to growing societal awareness around DEIB issues, the school revisited its DEIB mission statement to ensure it was aligned with Village's core values to guide the school’s policies, practices, and interactions.

This effort included adding the "B" for Belonging to the original DEI framework, highlighting the importance of creating a community where every individual feels valued and included.

To refine the mission, Village formed a DEIB parent committee, tasked with researching the diversity mission statements of peer schools and gathering diverse perspectives. This process involved drafting and circulating multiple versions of the mission statement, each refined based on feedback to better reflect the shared vision of the Village community.

The primary goal was to create a DEIB statement aligned with the Village Values of Caring, Courage, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, Trust, and Integrity. These values resonate with our parent community and the youngest to oldest learners on campus.
Introducing DEIB concepts early and helps broaden student perspectives on diversity and inclusion, making these concepts an integral part of their worldview as they grow. The updated values-aligned DEIB mission statement reflects Village’s dedication to creating a safe and inclusive culture for all students, preparing them to engage with the broader world responsibly and empathetically.

Who Are We? 

We are a diverse and inclusive committee of the Village School Board of Trustees, composed of parents, faculty, and trustees, dedicated to advancing the critical mission outlined in our general DEIB Mission Statement and Philosophy. One or more trustees chair the committee, which partners with the Head of School, the Assistant Head of School for Academic Programs, Equity, and Belonging, and the faculty Committee for DEIB. 

Our Mission 

At Village, we recognize fostering a sense of belonging that embraces and celebrates our diversity is a continuous effort involving every community member. As one of the eight vital committees of Village School’s Board of Trustees, the Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) plays a pivotal role. We collaborate with families, teachers, and the administration to ensure these values are deeply ingrained and amplified within our school community.
