Admissions Upper Division

The Program

Creation of the Upper Division allows faculty  members to focus and hone in on an area of expertise and passion. Students benefit from this expertise and make connections with a rich diversity of faculty members as they rotate through the day. Students travel in their homeroom cohort as they move from class to class affording them a sense of class community and connection. Each morning begins with an hour of homeroom. During this time students receive both the academic and social and emotional support that defines the Village School experience. This touchstone cultivates the sense of community within each cohort and with their homeroom teacher. Every fifth and sixth grade student meets with each Upper Division faculty member. In addition, Ms. Burkhardt and Mr. Warmer each lead a sixth grade homeroom, and Mr. Lind and Mrs. Pogach each lead a fifth grade homeroom.

STEAM

Village School's STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) program offers a cutting edge curriculum based on solving real-world challenges. STEAM utilizes our rigorous and hands-on science program to foster points of integration within other content areas. Students engage in innovative applications that develop their critical thinking and collaborative skills.

Literature - Anu Burkhardt
My love for reading started at a young age, and I am thrilled to share my enthusiasm for great literature with students. I believe that cultures are built on stories. Books have the power to stir the senses and inspire the imagination. My goal is to spark an interest in my students that will last a lifetime.

Writing - Tim Lind
I really enjoy working with every student in both grades. Beyond that, I have designed an engaging and inspiring writing curriculum that develops much needed skills and promotes creativity, originality, and imagination.

Global Studies - Theresa Pogach
My favorite education quote, one that hangs in my classroom, comes from Albert Einstein. "Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think." We spend the year dissecting, debating, and learning meaningful lessons from the events and cultures of the past. Students immerse themselves in the lives, struggles, and triumphs of our most influential historical figures, while also integrating technology and research skills to ask and answer the timeless questions that history evokes. I am honored to join the students on this journey of discovery.

Mathematics - Alex Warmer
I am really eager to get to know and work with the students for two years. In math, it is a time when they go from concrete to abstract thinking and each year I look forward to guiding that process.

Diversity & Inclusion - Rachel Nagler
I look forward to our students having intentional conversations about diversity, social identity groups, and social justice. Through discussions about their own identity as well as how to be an advocate and an ally, students begin to find their own voice as the future leaders of positive social change.

STEAM Coordinator - Landon Loeber
Through our STEAM curriculum students are exposed to integrated projects that deepen and define their thinking. Throughout these activities, students are guided through the design process allowing them to develop beyond simple content and into answering real-world problems and critical thinking.

Math Specialist - Kenzo Bergeron
Everyday I welcome the opportunity to develop the mathematical thinking of all of our students. Sharing my love for math, problem solving, and collaboration with students and faculty is an honor!
